BEWARE. It sure feels like the same incident, so I'll be throwing my Slingbox in the trash.
It worked great for him, and I even watched it too. I was given my Slingbox by a friend.
Slingbox now wants me to pay another $30 because I'm told it's a separate incident. When I set it up with my Uverse DVR I could not get remote viewing to work, so I called tech support (outsouced to India btw) I decided to pay the $30 to have tech support set up my remote viewing.
My first trip out of my "home" network remote viewing would not work. Tech support is clearly how this company makes its money.
If yours doesn't setup easily it'll cost a lot more that the purchase price.
Well, this time I was politely informed that it would cost me something like $30 to get the help I was asking for. It works great. I politely declined their offer to take more of my money for them to support their own product. Through it all the Slingbox keeps working.
Click on "Setup Assistant" on the pulldown menu. Trouble is, I also need to reconfigure the Slingbox to keep up with changes in order to view my TV remotely online. So, I called Slingbox support for help (they had, I recall, helped me set up earlier). I've used a Slingbox Classic for years. A message appeared: "Your Slingbox can now be viewed over the Internet". For that I would have to pay the fee.
Then, I checked the support pages once again online to see what I had to do to view my TV remotely with my Slingbox. Answer was, Click on "Settings".
It took me, maybe, two minutes to do this - less time than the "support" person used to try to wrangle $30 from me. But, from time to time my home network gets hiccups and I need to change routers, ISPs, modems, my IP address, firewall configuration and so on.
Then, Click on "Setup Internet Viewing". Equally politely I asked if they would just show me where to go on their site to get the information I needed.
No. There was a pause while my home network was being configured to broadcast my Slingbox signal to me over the internet.
As soon as Slingmedia gets real competition for the Slingbox I believe they will find themselves losing customers that were quite satisfied with the product - but disgusted with the company that manufactured it and was responsible for supporting customers.
I downloaded the latest Software and Firmware (that I would recommend) and after having scanned the channels, I was able to watch TV full screen on my computer through the wireless. I was a little bit skeptical to start with as I used to have other TV on computer video cards and weren't very pleased, however I didn't get disappointed with the slingbox classic. Setting it up was a breeze, just had to plug my coax cable into it and plug the network cable to the router. In order to be able to watch TV outside of your network, you will need to put the IP address of the slingbox in the DMZ for your router manually (at least for Linksys). So far it's been working well, love it.
It was extremely easy to setup and it worked perfectly instantly. The ISP at the sending end of the Slingbox needs to have at least 512kbps upload speed. Boy, was I surprised. I saw this product on sale and thought it was worth a try for the price. I highly recommend this product to everyone. Only one computer can access the Slingbox at a time.
I've connected a computer to my TV so we can watch it on the big screen. Here are a few things to keep in mind about the Slingbox.
The video on the remote computer was smooth and clear.I am using the Slingbox via the internet from one house to another.
I can dock the video player and watch SportsCenter while surfing the internet at the same time.
I loved the concept but I was very skeptical that it would really work.
I would also suggest at least 4gb download rate.Overall, I am so happy with this product.
I only have basic cable at my house and when my girlfriend comes over she complains.
So I connnected the Slingbox at her house and now she can watch her cable at my house.
I would give it 10 stars.
It really works.
Other than the purchase price, there is NO monthly fee to use this. If you are working out of town a lot and want to watch your TIVOed programs or any other programs on your own home TV, then this is for you. I bought it for my husband and he could watch his Speed Channel programs from his laptop in the comfort of his hotel room or airport club room while waiting for a flight. You do need internet access. Enjoy.
